Joburg, a Smart Digital City.
The Johannesburg Broadband Network Project draws its strengths from both the public and private sectors.
Ericsson is the world leader in the provision of telecommunication equipment & services and the City of Joburg, has a vision which has been the vital driving force in addressing the needs of its citizens. BWired is now the catalyst that has been born out of this partnership, and is taking huge strides in not only enabling the network, but becoming the operator and face of the Johannesburg Broadband Network Project.
The opportunities presented by this project are immense in that a new socio-economic era will emerge out of it, which will contribute to the efficiency of the City’s service delivery.
This project will go a long way in stimulating and helping reduce the cost of communication in the City which will give residents of Joburg, including SMME’s and start-ups, the opportunity to manage their communication costs more effectively than before.
Currently, the network has been under construction for just under 1 year. We have trenched and deployed over 300 km of the planned 940 km of fibre. That’s half way to Durban! We have completed the 9 Core Rings that link the South (Soweto) to the North (Midrand). We are close to having the first 100 buildings of the City of Johannesburg enabled with this fibre, which is approximately 3 months ahead of schedule. In addition, we are in constant communications with the various MoE’s that are linked to the City such as City Power; Joburg Water and Pikitup to mention a few. In order to fully meet their requirements, we have to completely understand their businesses. Because of this, we are here today to demonstrate not only the current capability of the network, but also the envisioned benefit that the Broadband Network Project will bring to the Citizens of Johannesburg.
Most companies talk about bridging the digital divide. BWired is the company that crosses that bridge
